The year 2020 has been a roller coaster a lot of people can’t wait to get off of. Luckily, the Christmas season is right around the corner, giving us all a much-needed reason to celebrate before bidding the year adieu.
But with all the craziness that happened this year, it can feel like the holiday season snuck up on you and your home still isn’t prepared. Below, we share creative ways to make your home more festive and ready for the holidays.
1. Pick a theme to work with
Before buying supplies or redecorating your home, decide on the theme you want to work with. By establishing a theme, you reduce the hassle of being bombarded with a million different decorating options.
Your theme could be based on a colour, a design trend, or something you love. Maybe you recently got into The Office. You’d be surprised how many The Office-themed Christmas décor is out there. Maybe you want to have a red Christmas. Then your supply shopping excursion will be easier because you only need to focus on red decorations instead of considering everything.
2. Start from the outside in
Once you’ve chosen a theme and have your decorating supplies ready, you’re probably bursting with ideas on how your home will look for the season. The best place to start turning those ideas into reality is your outdoor space.
Let the outside world know you’re feeling the holiday spirit by bedecking your front porch with Christmas decor. With reindeer on your stoop, wreaths hanging on your front door, and LED strip lights complete with a controller framing your home, there’s no mistaking your house is holiday-ready.
3. Spruce up the main spaces
With your outdoor space properly Christmassy, it’s time to turn your focus on the main areas inside your home. You don’t have to decorate every nook and cranny of your home, though. Your entryway, living room, and kitchen are likely the areas that see the most traffic, so focus on making these spaces festive.
Give yourself a holiday-themed welcome every time you come home with a Christmas-ready entryway. Wrap the banister with a wreath. Hang the stocking by the fireplace and frame the windows with tinsel and Christmas lights. Use Christmas-themed pillow covers and have a tartan throw blanket for your living room couch.
Go as all-out or as minimalist as you want, as long as you focus on decorating your home’s main areas.
4. Prepare for guests
While huge gatherings may not be in the cards for this year’s Christmas celebrations, it’s best to prepare your guest room for family members that might be planning to visit and stay during the holidays.
You don’t necessarily have to decorate your guest room for Christmas. A little tidying up, such as updating the cosy bedding and making sure guests have everything they need for a comfortable stay, goes a long way to make your guests feel right at home.
The holiday season is a great time to bond and create new memories with your loved ones. But if you’re not prepared, it can also be a stressful time. Don’t burden yourself more than this year already has, and start making your home holiday-ready today.
